Rev. Derrick B, Wells, Senior Minister of Christ Universal Temple ("CUT") (cutemple.org) is our guest today on Mystic Magic. He and Rev. Celeste cover many topics including Derrick's redemption story from his journey as a young urban male. His naivety at that time that led him into a life of crime left when he started to meet the consequences of his decisions. His transformation came from changing his thinking. He so thoroughly changed himself, realigned his energy and rewired himself to follow the pull to his next greatest self.

During his time in the navy as a young man in his early 20's, he would lead Islamic prayers, and young couples would come to him for relationship advice and many shipmates came to him with their challenges. Derrick realized later in his life that his time in the military was laying the foundation for his ministry in counseling and coaching. Although leadership was natural for him, he didn't think he was gifted. He thought it was the way you were supposed to treat people.

Rev. Celeste and Rev. Derrick discussed how to guide young Black men during these times with the goal of getting home. He shared how his son challenged him. After the George Floyd murder, his son asked what if that happened to him. Rev. Derrick assured him they were covered by prayer. He forced Derrick to deal with the possibility of it happening to one of his friends. Rev. Derrick had to re-evaluate what he would do in terms of his own personal engagement of being part of the solution.

Derrick's book, "Guidelines for a Master" (https://www.amazon.com/Guidelines-Master-Dr-Derrick-Wells/dp/1544262302) pulls from "The Last Dragon" martial arts film (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089461/). Celeste and Derrick discussed centering, mindfulness and engaging in a major challenge. Jesus' centered awareness knows God is - regardless of the situation. We ground ourselves in Peace when entering into the storm. Derrick mentioned Gary Simmon's "I of the Storm" (https://www.amazon.com/Storm-Embracing-Conflict-Creating-Peace/dp/0871592703) book as they are studying it now at CUT.

They discussed police officers using mastery in policing in their own community versus succumbing to fear in other areas. Celeste has many police officers in her family. She calls it all part of the transformation that is leading to healing.

Rev. Derrick took the pulpit established by Rev. Johnnie Mae Colemon (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-johnnie-colemon-obituary-met-20141224-story.html). Rev. Derrick's commitment to unearth his authentic self helped him to meet the challenge of successfully navigating the pulpit of the icon Johnnie Colemon.

Find Derrick on Facebook on Wednesday evenings at 7 pm for "Temple Talks" (https://www.facebook.com/revderrickwells). He gave shouts out to his Mission Critical team members, Revs. Roderick Norton (https://www.empowerliving.org/roderick-n-norton-spiritual-director/) and Gaylon McDowell (https://www.chicagoideas.com/speakers/gaylon-mcdowell). Derrick also mentioned his upcoming e-book: "Six Keys to Design Your Life" that comes with an e-course to intentionally design your life. He does spiritual coaching. And his upcoming memoir is something to look forward to that is in the offing as well.

Rev. Celeste's poem is called Vision, Passion and Purpose.
